Killian

Killian stood frozen. His soul was torn in two different directions. He wanted to lunge at the wolf — tear him limb from limb, leave nothing behind but scraps of fur and flesh — but seeing the white glint of the assassin's yellow-stained fangs pressed to his mate's throat forced him to stay in his place. Killian dug his claws into the ground in anger. Everything inside him burned. He almost felt as if he could breathe fire. He wish he could. He wanted to singe the smug look on the assassin's face right off.

"So, we have a deal then?" the assassin asked.

"What deal?" Killian snapped.

The smirk on the grey wolf's face turned into a snarl. "You'd better watch your tone."

Killian shut his mouth, his jaw clenched so tight it hurt.

Stark stepped forward. "What are your demands?" he asked. His voice was calm and measured — Killian appreciated that he could keep his composure at a time like this. That was why his father made him commander of the alpha guard, Killian assumed.

"You can have your omega back for a fair exchange," the grey wolf said.

"What is it?" Stark asked, his voice stiff.

His ugly gaze raked over Kyle and the rest of the omegas behind the royal guard. "I want all the omegas you stole from us," he growled.

"What?" That broke Stark's calm. He looked like he'd been gutted.

But Killian didn't care. In that moment, nothing mattered to him except getting his mate back safe and sound. He would give up every single omega in Whitewood for him — that was how intensely his passion burned for his omega. He stepped forward and opened his mouth, about to complete the exchange, when a sharp cry made every wolf pause.

"Wait!"

All eyes were on Scout now. He looked tiny, frightened and flat against the ground underneath the grey wolf. But his eyes were full of determination. "I don't agree to these terms."

"Scout—" Killian began, warningly.

Stark whirled towards his prince, his eyes flashing with concern and betrayal. "Sir, you can't—"

In that moment, Killian almost wanted to bite Stark. He didn't understand — he didn't have an omega. He didn't know the horrible pain tearing him apart from the inside. Killian would have given up the whole world for Scout — he would have given up his own life.

A thought occurred to him.

"I'll give you a better deal," Killian growled coldly as he stepped forward. "You let my mate go in exchange for me instead."

A moment of shock descended on the royal guards and the Whitewood omegas. Even Scout was stunned. Then he sputtered, "Killian—"

"No," the grey wolf stated. "Not interested."

"What?" Killian snarled. "I am the prince of Whitewood pack, born of royalty. Countless generations of royal shifter blood runs through my veins. All of this — and you can do anything you want with me. Surely I'm worth more to you than my mate."

The assassin's ear twitched. "You’d think so, wouldn’t you."

Killian growled. "Are you mocking me?"

Instantly Stark pressed against his shoulder, reminding him to stay calm.
